Mission, Vision & Values

Vision: A future where children, youth, families, and communities thrive because the systems that shape their lives are equitable, prevention-centered, and guided by the lived expertise, wisdom, and leadership of those who know them best.

Mission Statement: To transform systems by advancing community-informed solutions guided by the knowledge, wisdom, and leadership of people with lived expertise, strengthening the well-being of children, youth, families, and communities through dignity, compassion, equity, and justice.

Who We Are: We are a lived expertise-led organization advancing systems transformation for children, youth, families, and communities. By centering the knowledge, wisdom, and leadership of people with lived expertise, we help reimagine and transform systems that honor community strengths, respond to community needs, and create the conditions for children, youth, families, and communities to thrive.

What We Do: We advance systems transformation for children, youth, families, and communities by fostering collaboration across sectors, systems, and communities and advancing community-informed solutions that promote prevention and well-being. As a catalyst for systems learning and innovation, we help bring new ideas, perspectives, and possibilities forward, supporting partners and communities in advancing human-centered, equitable systems that strengthen families, reduce unnecessary systems involvement, and promote long-term well-being.

How We Work: LENS is guided by lived expertise: the knowledge, wisdom, and leadership that reveal how systems function in practice, where they fall short, and what is needed to create meaningful change. We bring together lived expertise, community wisdom, and system knowledge to foster belonging, build collective power, illuminate possibilities, shape solutions, and advance systems transformation. Through collaboration, learning, and innovation, we help translate lived expertise into collective influence and action, shaping narratives, strengthening practice, aligning systems, and advancing policies that support the well-being of children, youth, families, and communities.

Our Values

  • We are led by lived expertise. We recognize lived expertise as a source of knowledge, wisdom, and leadership that must shape how systems are understood, decisions are made, and solutions are created. People with lived expertise are not simply participants, advisors, or voices to be included, they are partners and leaders whose insight and leadership help guide our organization, our work, and the change we seek. We are committed to ensuring that lived expertise is embedded throughout LENS, from our leadership and governance to our partnerships, priorities, and decision-making. People with lived expertise will not simply have a seat at the table; they will help shape the table itself.
  • We are justice seekers. We recognize that the systems shaping people’s lives are influenced by histories of inequity, oppression, and marginalization. We acknowledge the ways racism, classism, and other forms of injustice create disparities and barriers that impact children, youth, families, and communities. We believe meaningful systems change requires the courage to confront these inequities, challenge harmful practices, and work alongside those most impacted to create more equitable, just, and human-centered systems.
  • We lead with humility. We recognize that meaningful systems change requires curiosity, openness, and a willingness to learn. We value the knowledge, wisdom, and expertise of others and challenge ourselves to remain open to new perspectives and possibilities. We acknowledge the limits of our own understanding, take responsibility when we fall short, and continuously seek opportunities to learn, grow, and improve.
  • We build collective power through partnership. We recognize that meaningful systems transformation requires collective action across communities, organizations, and systems. We are part of a larger ecosystem, and our impact depends on our ability to build authentic relationships, honor the unique roles and expertise of others, and work together toward shared goals. We seek to strengthen one another, challenge each other to grow, and create the conditions for more equitable and effective systems
  • We build trust through accountability. Trust is the foundation of our relationships, with people with lived expertise, communities, partners, supporters, and one another. We recognize that trust must be earned through consistency, transparency, humility, and action. We strive to honor our commitments, listen with openness, and take responsibility when we fall short. By building relationships grounded in respect and accountability, we create the conditions for meaningful collaboration and lasting systems change.
  • We honor the dignity of every person. We believe every person has inherent worth, wisdom, and the capacity to contribute to meaningful change. We strive to honor each person’s experiences, perspectives, and values while recognizing that people’s lives are shaped by their histories, circumstances, environments, and systems. We approach others with compassion and curiosity while disrupting the narratives, assumptions, practices, and structures that undermine dignity, equity, and belonging.
  • We lead with integrity. We are committed to transparency, honesty, and accountability in all aspects of our work. We strive to align our actions with our values, communicate openly, and create meaningful opportunities for people with lived expertise, partners, and communities to provide input and influence our work. When we fall short, we acknowledge it, learn from it, and take responsibility for making things right.
  • We lead with courage and conviction. We believe meaningful systems transformation requires more than recognizing what is possible, it requires the courage, persistence, and conviction to pursue what is necessary. We approach this work with a willingness to question longstanding narratives, challenge assumptions, disrupt harmful practices, and transform systems so they reflect the wisdom, strengths, and needs of the people and communities they are intended to serve. We remain committed to advancing change alongside people with lived expertise and community partners, creating new possibilities for systems that are more responsive, effective, and shaped by those who know them best.
